IP Curation
Or, how re-staking provides legitimacy on IP assets.
Permissionless Registration
The permissionless IP registration system on Story greatly facilitates IP adoption and monetization, but a key problem arises: Anyone can register an IP and say they own a cool idea or creation. A successfully registered IP Asset onto Story does not automatically guarantee its legitimacy. If it turns out the IP is infringing upon existing IPs, the IP can be disputed and consequently invalidated. To make it worse, anyone who has built derivatives on top of that IP will have their registered child IP invalidated as well. This scenario makes creators worried because they can’t always trust the IP building block they want to use. Therefore, in this open IP world, creators need some kind of signal to identify the most legitimate IP building blocks to work with.
Benefits of Re-Staking
The basic re-staking flow works as follows:
Any user or creator can register an IP asset on Verio.
To encourage the utilization and derivative innovation on a registered IP, its owner (and Verio) can offer rewards on the IP asset to attract stakers.
Stakers can choose to stake on the IP asset and earn rewards, endorsing the legitimacy of the IP asset. This can also be seen as a relative indicator of the value of said asset.
The amount of vIP staked on an IP asset serves as a legitimacy signal for creators when they decide whether to innovate or remix using this IP. Now if two IP assets seem too similar, the community can decide which one they view as legitimate even if it isn't being traded anywhere.
With a strong legitimacy signal, other creators will try to utilize and create derivatives on the IP, generating the owner of the original IP more revenue and royalties.
